It was a dark night way back in 1935.
Erwin Schrödinger, the Austrian
physicist had a brilliant idea. He called it The Schrödinger's cat.
Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment, sometimes described as The Greatest
Paradox, devised by Erwin Schrödinger. It illustrates what he saw as the
problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday
objects, resulting in a Contradiction with Common Sense. The scenario presents
a cat that may be both alive & dead at the same time, depending on an
earlier random event.
Basically, in the
experiment, a cat is placed in a sealed box containing a radioactive source
& a glass flask filled with poison. Now, the box has an internal
radioactivity monitor, if this internal monitor detects radioactivity then it
shatters the glass flask, thus releasing the poison that kills the cat. However, if there is no radioactivity then the glass flask containing poison will
not break & the cat may be alive & live forever...
That’s a lie, cats
don’t live forever, nothing does. If the cat is kept inside the box for too
long then it may die due to loss of oxygen but if the cat has nine lives then
it may just make it to another life, reborn as fortune’s child, inside the box.
Quite unlikely.
The Copenhagen
interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is
simultaneously dead & alive. Meaning, if the box is never opened, we may
never know whether the cat is alive or dead hence making it both alive &
dead at the same time. Yet, when one looks into the box, one sees the cat, alive
or dead and definitely not both alive & dead simultaneously. This poses the
question of when exactly does quantum superposition end & reality collapses
into one single possibility or other.
Or in other words
where exactly does a lie end & truth becomes a stark reality to stare you
right into the eyes…??
A little confusing...??
Even I was a bit confused, when I experienced
it for the first time. But there’s always a first time. A time when that little
thing at the back of your neck says, “JUMP”. A time when you think, “It’s now
or never”.
A time when it’s dark and you are alone. You don’t know whether it
is an opportunity knocking at the door or else. But you take a chance. You head
for the door.
A time when you don’t think about it but just trust your
instincts.
As you go deeper, you understand the true meaning of it.
And the
more you go deeper, the more interesting & intriguing it becomes....
Just like
life...
The more you think about it, the deeper it seems. The deeper you go, the
more you think about it.
It’s like going round in circles or is it like
completing a journey. Is it the end of
it or is it a new beginning.
Or is it too late, by the time you realize it. It may have just slipped through your hands.
Life goes by. Life always goes on. But sooner or later it comes back in a full circle.
We
need to stop somewhere. We have to put our foot down & say,
“Hey, I think I
can do it now, I think my time has come now…”
So is the cat dead or alive...
Look at the picture above. Stare at it for some time. What do you Think. What do you see.
This is not philosophy. This is reality.
Never mind if the cat is alive or dead. Is that what you were thinking about.
What were you thinking about. Do you think your time has come now. JUMP...
I believe that the Schrödinger's cat is
alive.
Imagine a simple cat, meowing all her
life, drinking milk & scratching & licking, subjected to a
controversial yet path-breaking science experiment, involving being kept closed
in a box filled with a radioactive source & a flask filled with poison.
Kept in the box, till eternity...
Not knowing when it will see the light
of the day, not knowing whether it will ever see anything else again. Not
losing its mind. Not bending down, not crumbling under pressure, not succumbing
to the situation and definitely not being a coward & losing hope.
The box is opened, the cat comes out
alive.
Now, she's a true survivor.
Surviving against all odds, surviving
to tell the story.
